Request an AppointmentWhat is breast surgery?
The primary organ where your cancer cells start to grow determines the type of cancer you have. With breast cancer, the abnormal cells initiate in your breast tissue. Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer affecting women, only preceded by skin cancer.
Surgical removal of the cancerous tissue is the primary method of treatment for breast cancer. Radiation and/or chemotherapy may also be recommended depending on the type and stage of cancer you have.
When it comes to breast surgery for breast cancer, no single method works for all. Dr. Serrano at Precision Surgery and Advanced Vein Therapy takes a personalized approach to care and develops a surgical plan that best meets your health and wellness needs.
What are the types of breast surgery?
There are two primary types of breast surgery for breast cancer. These types include:
Breast conservation surgery
Breast conservation surgery, also referred to as a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, is a procedure in which only the tumor and some of the surrounding tissue in the breast are removed. During this procedure. Dr. Serrano may also perform a MammoSite® insertion, which is a targeted form of radiation therapy, or brachytherapy.
Mastectomy
During a mastectomy, the entire breast and some of the surrounding tissue are removed, as well as some lymph nodes. Dr. Serrano also performs a modified radical mastectomy in which the breast tissue is removed, and a plastic surgeon performs reconstruction of the breast.
Simple Mastectomy
Removal of breast mound without lymph nodes. This can also be performed in men with Gynecomastia. [Breast Enlargement]
At Precision Surgery and Advanced Vein Therapy, Dr. Serrano also performs micropuncture surgery for biopsy of a breast lesion found during a mammogram.
Am I a good candidate for breast conservation surgery?
The benefit of breast conservation surgery is that it allows you to retain much of your breast tissue. Whether you’re a good candidate for the surgery depends on many factors, including:
- Size of your tumor
- Stage of your cancer
- Concerns about cancer recurrence
If you’re considered a good candidate for breast conservation surgery, then you must undergo radiation therapy following your surgery. If you have a mastectomy during the early stages of breast cancer, radiation therapy may not be necessary.
